quality getting worse as the prices go downby: raceviper13

I just got my last batch of photos from Winkflash. They were a revelation a long time ago, but now they are on par with my local RiteAid digital developing. I am very disapponted and will have to find a new place to get my prints developed.

Since June of 2004, I have placed 76 orders with winkflash.com ($1058.40), and have never, NEVER, had a problem with either uploading or with the quality of the prints; that is, the prints have always appeared identical or very nearly so to the images as displayed on my PC. These prints are for our family photo albums, and the balance between quality and price very much favors winkflash.com – at least for us. Two years ago or so Winkflash duplicated, in error, my order, but promptly refunded the cost of that order after I sent the duplicate prints back and requested a refund of the duplicate charge. I crop and adjust the exposure and color of all my photos with Adobe Photoshop Elements before sending to winkflash.com at a resolution of 300 dpi; I always use their high resolution option even though the upload takes a little longer. All of my orders range from 50 to 250 prints, with the norm being 100 to 150. The camera I use is a Canon Powershot G3. The vast majority of prints I order are 4x6, but the 5x7’s and the 8x10’s I occasionally ordered have been very good. We returned from a tour of Morocco in October of 2007 with over 1000 photos. Winkflash.com printed all of those flawlessly. Again, I broke the order into parts if that makes a difference.

I have used Winkflash twice, and both times were very disappointing. My experience was not unlike some other reviewers' on Epinions. Having received my first, free, order with unsatisfactory quality, I had to forfeit Winkflash's offer of money refund, because there was no money to refund. Instead, I reordered the full order and had to pay for it, including for shipping again. Don't know why I decided to try them again, probably because of their "half price off" 6 cents per print offer. This time again, their filters were off or something, but the bottom line is, all my light-blue color became turquoise, and all my green color became "painful-to-look-at" green. Winkflash's return policy is such that you have to send them photos back, at your own expense, and then, if they decide it was a processing error, they JUST MIGHT reimburse your shipping cost. Well, I was not lucky and the vivid colors on my prints were not acknowledged by Winkflash as an error. I got my money back for the prints, but not for any shipping costs. Now, many dollars poorer, I have to start from scratch. And I will, but with a different vendor. I have tried several vendors before: Shutterfly, Snapfish, and such, and never was I so displeased as with Winkflash! Do not waste your money, do not get lured by low prices. Winkflash just means BAD QUALITY, and they are in denial about this, which is even worse. Hope this helps in your future decision.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I have done a few orders with Winkflash and have been happy each time. The quality of my 4x6 prints have been nice. I've done Christmas cards with them that I have been happy with. I placed an order this past Sunday and had the cards on Wednesday. I've sent pictures for a friend who did not know how to use the service, and all of her 100 or so prints were of good quality and she was very happy. I used the $.06 sale for a number of prints because even with the higher shipping costs it was cheaper. Can't beat the flat rate $.99 shipping. I'll use them again.

Frustrating experienceby: csmithfl

Four times a year I order 4 sets of 200-300 pictures, so I order about 800-1200 prints at one time. Since the birth of my son in October 2006, I haven't ordered any prints. I had nearly 900 pictures that I needed to get printed. I saw that winkflash was having a 6 cent print sale, and I decided to give them a try. From their website, I couldn't tell what the shipping would be, so I gave them a call. I was told that a flat shipping rate of $9.99 would apply to my order. Based on this info, I installed their software and began loading my pictures to their website. This process took nearly 24 hours. After the pictures loaded, I began to place my order. The total was showing $41.67 for shipping not the $9.99 flat rate I had been quoted. I called again and was told that the shipping rates had been changed as of that morning and that they couldn't make any adjustment to the pricing. I was very frustrated that I wasted a day uploading pictures to their site and they wouldn't honor the shipping rate they quoted me when I called the day before. I got off the phone with winkflash and began working on ordering my prints from the company I normally deal with pephoto. They were having a 6 cent sale as well. There was a 99 cent processing fee and $17.99 for shipping. Based on their customer service, I will NEVER try winkflash again.

I ordered approximatley 200 prints, roughly 60 of them were so dark some were hard to tell which picture it was. There was one print that had two exposured on the same piece of paper. These same 60 prints ordered else where came out perfect. This is the second time that part of an order from them came back poorly printed. Their quality control is horrible. On a side note, they did do an excellent job on print on canvas.

I've placed 16 orders with Winkflash because the prices are the best around. Quality varies significantly. I've had 10x15's that were great and 4x6's that were off-color and not sharp. However I'm abandoning them and it's due to the lack of truth in advertising and unacceptable processing time. They advertise that orders are usually processed within 24-48 hours. Ha! I don't know that any of mine were completed within that time. You check their website order status feature and, day after day, it says that your order is "printing." It may say "shipped" but five days later, your order still hasn't arrived. I've sent e-mails to customer service that have been ignored. They've lost orders for photo calendars placed in November for Christmas. They finally responded to a second inquiry for two slowly processed orders in a row at the end of July and the beginning of August with a canned statement that says they are unexpectedly busy because of a big response to a special. It's disappointing to order gift photos for others and have Winkflash repeatedly fail to deliver anywhere close to their advertised promised timeframe. Seems like false advertising to me and no longer worth the hassle.

Over exposes prints (reposting with line breaks)by: jitendramohan

I printed identical set of 20 photos at five online photo printing sites and rated each photo 1 (Best) - 5 (Worst). Then I added all the scores for an overall score. Also noted if a site got any 5s (unacceptable quality).

NOTE: I ENABLED automatic image correction/optimization. So, I am comparing not only the print quality, but also the ability to enhance poor photos and not mess up the good ones! Undoubtedly, the results may be different if color/exposure correction is not desired.

1. Adorama: Clearly the winner. Best picture quality. No 5s. I think one 4. They use heavier paper. Option to print lots of stuff on the back, including, date image taken. The web site is so good, I would prefer to do mass adjustments (specially cropping) online. They automatically flag the photos that are not the right aspect ratio. Then they give you the option to adjust them individually or all at once. I chose individual editing and it was surprisingly quick. If uploading is a pain, they will take a CD or a DVD. I finally printed 2500 photos with Adorama, taking advantage of their 10c sale. Otherwise it would have been 16c and I would likely have gone with dimeprints.com.

2. Dime Prints: Came in second after Adorama. This was a surprise as their rates are half of Adorama. Had I not got the sale at Adorama, this is where I would have printed my 2500 photos! Good color, sometimes better than Adorama. There were only a couple of 4s/5s. Website is so-so.

3. York Photo: Quality and service were good. However no information on the back. That was a deal breaker.

4: Costco: Most expensive. All photos had a blue tint and therefore many ended up with 4s and 5s.

5: Winkflash: Many 5s. Worst overall score. Many photos brightened too much. Image name printed on the back was very faint.

The Best I have Seenby: grayscrk

I have recently placed 2 orders containing 200 pictures. I received them within 4-5 days of placing my order. The quality of both the paper and the color print are remarkable. Absolutely the BEST I have ever seen. Colors are vibrant and true. I just placed my 3rd order of over 500 pictures and with the current promotion of 6 cents for each 4x6 print also made them EXTREMELY AFFORDABLE. As long as quality and price remain at this level, I seriously doubt I will use any other photo developer again, unless I need something within 1 hour. I highly recommend this company.

Pain in butt. I have 650 pics to print urgently, all of them edited and formatted in Adobe Photoshop. Spent all day to order online, each attempt took l…………o…………n………..g time, and asked me to log out for five minutes and try again. I did so many times without any result. I wanted to send those pics in a cd, but in their web site there is no address for the send outs, you have to have use there own CD, which usually takes 5 days to come. Sucks! I emailed them for send out address. No response yet. Only reason I am still using there service- there print quality is superior to any photo lab. There price for 5X7 is unbeatable. Otherwise I would not bother to use this lab.

For the price you cannot find any website that is better. Shipping .99 No matter how big the order. They give you virtually free products. I ordered a 100-page 8x10 photo book. The cost was $50. The quality was super. Can you get better quality sure you can by may be 5% but the cheapest I found was $150 for the same product. (Snapfish $120, shutterfly $130, Kodak $140 for 80 pages) I never had problem with them so I am not sure about their customer service. I have had more the 15 orders and over 2000 photo. Not a single complain. 16x20Stretched Canvas at winkflash $36. Snapfish $80. Shutterfly $90. By far, THEY ARE THE CHEAPEST on everything. Quality, not the best but among the best. Though they are comparable to the best, do not compare a $36 product with a $90 one.

Just printed 5X7 size 120 copies of different digital pictures. All came excellent. I edited my pictures in Adobe Photoshop CS2 , I corrected brightness, contrast, sharpened and crop them in 5X7 size with 300 pixels per inch and saved them as uncompressed tiff file. Prints were exact copies of what I saw in my monitor. Upon uploading my digital files I opt out ‘Image Enhancement’ options and added borders, as my files were exactly 5X7 size. I also opt out ‘Inset’ (centering) options. My order was processed same day and shipped out in Priority mail, I was surprised receiving my photos in only 2 days. Only drawback I experienced was uploading digital files, it took hours though I used ‘Winkflash Transporter’. Little pricy but overall quality is nice. Thanks Winkflash.

Sure, the prices are great and that quality guarantee looks good. But it's not worth it. The photos looked terrible, and when I tried to email, the first answer took four days and they tried to tell me it was my fault that my monitor wasn't calibrated correctly. Only I have been using other services like snapfish with no issues a nd great photos. My monitor snd my camera are just fine. On the phone they were rude and hurried me through, not answering my questions.) Just don't bother.

While I love winkflash's price and shipping (only .99), I found their color to be too dark with my pictures. I ended up emailing them about this as I had one of their pictures and the same picture printed at another place that looked fine. They said they do not auto correct for color. They did refund my purchase when I shipped the order back. Just be warned.

The site is good simple to use it was fast to upload photos and finish the checkout steps. Not the cheapest service but the prices are very good. I got the prints fast and they were packaged in a good way. My real disappointment was with the quality of prints I mean they are ok but not the best - for casual phtoos I would use them again for important ones I would use someone else.
