Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K 10MP Digital Camera with 18x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black) |
| Product DescriptionPanasonic's new DMC-FZ28 boasts a premium 27mm wide-angle LEICA lens with an 18x optical zoom, ideal for tight indoor shots and long-distance action photos. The 10.1 megapixel digital camera also features an enhanced Intelligent Auto Mode (iA), with the new AF (auto focus) Tracking function, making it easier for photographers at any level to shoot sharp, well-focused photos, even when the subject is moving -- making it ideal for action shots.ReviewsI have owned film SLRs for years and one of the biggest drawbacks to me has always been the amount of equipment that you have to haul around with them, especially extra lenses, flashes, filters, film, etc.
On the other hand, I have had some digital point-and shoots and they are fine but just don't have all the features or abilities that I crave for certain situations and really creative photography.
But now, lo and behold, there is this whole other class of digital cameras that fits neatly between the point-and shoots and SLRs. My opinion is that it is hard to improve on this camera. In fact, if I had to sit down and design a camera for myself I doubt I could ask for anything more than what Panasonic has delivered.
Sure, we all can wish for some little item here or there that would tickle our innards just a little more, but overall, this camera is darn near perfect.
I researched all the reviews on it from Amazon and other well-respected photography sites and almost everyone has extremely high praise for it. And I have to say that it lives up to its billing.
I have been shooting in all sorts of conditions for weeks now and and I am impressed with the performance of this camera. First of all its light, very light. No sore neck or shoulder from hauling around a doorstop all day.
Want a wide focal range? Its here in spades with no extra lenses to schlep around.
Want a camera that can be fully automatic for those occasions when you just don't have much time to be fiddling with dials and knobs? You got it.
Want a camera that lets you be in total control of the exposure when you do want to fiddle with dials and knobs? You got it again.
And the bottom line is always the results. So far the results are fantastic. Sharp focus, especially on photos of people thanks to face detection auto-focus. Great color rendition in JPG files. And of course, you can also shoot RAW images for the ultimate in creative adjustments in your digital darkroom.
By the way, not many have commented on the software that comes with the camera, but that is another strong suit. The Silkpix program is great for adjusting RAW files and the Easy-PhotoPrint software handles the most common digital adjustments easily and quickly.
I could go on for a good while longer, but I won't. If you get this camera you won't be disappointed IMHO.
I just purchased the dmc fz28. I only have a couple of weeks but the performance so far has been very impressive. I love the look and the weight, even though its a full body camera it is very easy to carry around.
So I bought this and it arrived the week of my wedding, so I didn't have time to "play" with it before the first serious shots needed to be fired. I have had many, many point and shoots overtime, and this one is one of those cameras that do well if the settings are played with. For my wedding, we had several cameras, including the Canon SX200, which I am mentioning because with both cameras set on auto (easy) mode, the SX200 took far superior photos. I had my 2 nieces ages 17 and 15 taking photos with the cameras, so auto was the best option for them. The photos taken with the Canon SX200 looked professional, so much so, that the Walmart lab lady called me to ask me to get a wavier signed by my photographer before then could print them. I had explain that they were my photos from my cameras. I am not bais to Canon, either. I own 3 Casio's (the Z80, Z85, and the new s-12), 2 Canon's (the S3 IS, and the SX200), this Panasonic Lumix FZ28, and the Nikon D40 DSLR. Just wanted to let you know I used both the Lumix FZ28 and Canon SX200 in the same setting taking same photos both on easy mode, and the Canon SX200, blew it away.
I have taken a few more shots since the wedding, and they have come out very nice. I did not use auto, I made my own adjustments on the settings, and photos are much more vivid and less washed out. But, if you are looking for an easy camera either because you don't want to mess around with settings when taking photos, or you need a camera that you can hand off to a family memeber or bypasser (you know those times when you want to get you in the photo as well, so you ask a total stanger to take the shot), then I personally would recommened the Canon PowerShot SX200IS 12 MP Digital Camera with 12x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-inch LCD (Black). If you are the type of photographer that plays with the settings (I usually do since I am accustom to do so owning a DSLR), then you can produce some very nice photos.
I do have to admit the 18x zoom is so sweet. That is an option that gives this camera a little more star power. If you are missing out on a decent zoom, the 18x optical will be a welcoming addition to your ability to get in closer on the action.
Overall, it gave it 4 stars because alot of my girlfriends prefer an "auto" camera, no messing around with all the settings. For me, I know enough about settings to get the photo quality I like. That to me is where you will have to make your decision.
My 10-yr-old Kodak digital was due for replacement. I analized "my needs" online, and determined that I wanted to really zoom in on things, wanted quick recovery time and wanted both a viewfinder AND a screen. This camera has lots of features I haven't explored yet, but those I have are awesome. The manual assumes I know more about photography than I do, but in the one month I have used this camera it has me smiling. When the picture is not good, I realize what setting I had wrong, and the next shot is crisp as could be. One pleasant surprise - the included computer software that creates slide shows COMPLETE with music. For the money ($300) it's one terrific camera.
