Opteka OPT-SC37FE Platinum Series 0.3X HD Ultra Fisheye Lens for 25mm, 30mm, 30.5mm & 37mm Digital Video Camcorders |
| Product DescriptionAn essential tool for extreme sports and dramatic action shooters. The 0.3X Ultra Fisheye Adapter offers an extreme fisheye effect and a high degree of barrel distortion. It exaggerates depth by pulling nearby objects closer and causing distant objects to recede into the background. Advances in high-index / low-dispersion optical glasses, new barrel materials, and exotic anti-reflection coatings, along with the latest in computer-aided-design / computer-aided-manufacturing, are combined to produce lenses of unprecedented quality. Diamond-cut from crystal-clear, water-white optical glass, Opteka lenses are ground and polished to a precise precision. Because all Opteka lenses are designed and manufactured with the highest possible degree of consistency, you can swap lenses mid-shoot with no discernable variation in color or effect. The unprecedented purity, color saturation and repeatability of Opteka lenses virtually eliminate the need for lab color timing corrections caused by other lenses. This puts more creative control where it belongs - in your hands. Opteka lenses stand up to the most rigorous demands on the stage and on location. Opteka's hard anti-reflective (AR) coating offers protection specially formulated to resist flaking, peeling and scratching. This proprietary AR coating also reduces light loss and flare to less than 1% per surface, compared to untreated glass which has a light loss of 4% per surface. Opteka lenses allow you to shoot with total confidence!ReviewsThere aren't many options for a 37mm mount 0.3x fisheye at this price. The lens does work as a fisheye on my Sony XR500V camcorder (which records HD at 1080i). The center has reasonably good resolution, but the image quality degrades as you move out towards the edges where everything becomes severely blurred and has severe chromatic aberration (a white line near the edge of the frame becomes split into blurry red, green, and blue lines). People use fisheyes for the strange geometric distortion, so these additional optical problems may not bother you, but I would certainly not call this a "HD" lens in the sense of "high definition". I still give it 3 stars, because I didn't expect too much for the price.
This is my first fisheye lens, so I don't know how it holds up against other fisheye lens that cost more. But compared to some cheap wide-angle lens that stick out about an inch, this is a good buy for the price.
When I first attached it to my camcorder (Sony SR-11), the hood on the lens was slanted. I removed the three tiny screws with the included screwdriver, aligned the hood, and screwed it back in. I noticed that the further away from the center of the lens, the videos and pictures I took had a blue/orange distortion. Kind of like how a 3-D movie would look like if you weren't wearing the 3-D glasses. But this shouldn't be a major problem if you're rendering and uploading in 480p. I render my videos in 720p and upload them to vimeo, facebook, & youtube, and they look fine.
I have an external flash that mounts on top of my camcorder. When I take pictures with this lens on, the bottom 1/3 of the picture is dark since the lens is blocking the flash. This is not a problem to me because the added FOV the fisheye gives, makes up for the lost of flash. When taking pictures of people, the part that doesn't get flashed is usually the floor and feet of the subjects.
There should be some videos on youtube if you're curious how wide the fisheye is. I was hoping it would give me a completely circle vignette like those from skateboarding videos, but maybe it's because I'm shooting in 16:9
This performs exactly as expected / hoped. With the adapters, it fits easily in my video camera. You'll be surprised at how much more you can pick up in your shot. I highly recommend this product.
Its obviously a really great fish-eye for $100. I recommend this to anyone in need of a fish-eye, especially extreme sports filmers. Here is a video my friend made with this lens;[...]
I was put on to this product by a friend of mine that owns the Century Optics Baby Death Lense. This one is almost identical and for only 1/3 of the price...It's easy to install & take out and it has a better fisheye than the old lense I used (Opteka .43X HD). I recommend this to anyone looking for great fiseye effect on their videos.
