Amazon.com Product Review

The First Alert FAS1248 14-inch B/W Quad Monitoring System with 4 Cameras is a basic and reliable solution for remote monitoring of an entire office or area. Constructed within a durable plastic housing, the easy-to-set-up First Alert FAS1248 14-inch monitor comes complete with four B/W (black-and-white) cameras, each with a 60-foot cable so you can install them almost anywhere. This system features alarm compatibility and auto-switching, making it the perfect solution for when you require a simple and complete video surveillance system, and for monitoring multiple rooms, entrances, or other areas in your home or business.

The FAS1248 allows you to view up to four cameras in real time on a single monitor. The FAS1248's B/W monitor has a good resolution display of 350 TVL (TV lines) at center, and includes built-in power jacks for four cameras. This monitor features an auto-switching function that automatically switches between camera feeds whenever two or more cameras are connected. Also featured is an auto-switch time set that allows you to set the interval of time the monitor spends on each camera feed. The FAS1248 also includes a four-channel external and one-channel relay contact alarm in/out connection. This monitor runs on 18-volts DC power via an included AC/DC power adapter, and can operate in temperatures ranging from five- to 170-degrees Fahrenheit.

Each of the four cameras that comes with the FAS1248 utilize 0.33-inch B/W CCD (charge-coupled device) image sensors, and can deliver up to 380 horizontal TVL of resolution. These cameras all include six LEDs (light emitting diodes) that allow them to receive an image under no-light (0 Lux) conditions up to 10-feet away. Not only do these cameras have a low power consumption of only 1.3-watts, they feature automatic iris shutters with speeds ranging from 1/60 to 1/100,000 of a second. The cameras have operating temperatures of eight- to 144-degrees Fahrenheit.

Technical Features:

  • Sensitivity: 0 Lux up to 10 feet with IR LEDs
  • Resolution: 350 TVL for monitor, 380 TVL for cameras
  • Camera lenses: 3.6mm fixed
  • Monitor operating temperature: 5 to 170-degrees Fahrenheit
  • Monitor dimensions: 14 x 13 x 14 inches (W x D x H)
  • Camera operating temperature: 8 to 144-degrees Fahrenheit
  • Camera dimensions: 2.3 x 3.3 x 2 inches (W x D x H)
Designed primarily for indoor use, the First Alert FAS1248 four-camera and monitor system deserves serious consideration as one of the most user-friendly, complete monitoring solutions for medium scale basic surveillance applications. The cameras that come with this system are easy to use and install, and include built-in microphones that transmit sound to the monitor so you don't miss anything. User's should note that the CCD image sensors in the cameras may become permanently damaged if exposed to long hours of direct sunlight or halogen light, so the cameras should not be mounted or pointed directly at the sun or other bright-light sources.

About Surveillance Camera Technical Features
Lux rating is the measurement used to indicate how sensitive a camera is to light, and stands for the level of light reflected off a piece of paper by a candle from one meter away. Thus a sensitivity of three Lux would mean a camera could generate an acceptable picture of a piece-of-paper-sized object that was illuminated by the equivalent of three candles from one meter away. The lower the Lux level, the better the camera's ability to work in low-light conditions. The camera's resolution should be greater than or equal to the resolution supported by the system's recorder or monitor. The S/N, or signal to noise ratio, is an important measure of a camera's quality. A poor camera, low-light conditions or poor wiring causes "noise" which consumes processing power and disk space. A camera with a wide dynamic range is ideal, especially for recording areas in which both indoor and outdoor light are present. CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors provide high-quality images that are less susceptible to noise. CMOS (complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors offer less image quality, but are usually more cost-effective and energy efficient.

What's in the Box
