And as a bonus, this lens is the only lens in the EF system to offer an extra-small Micro Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) while still providing a full-time manual focusing option. ReviewsI've never used a prime lens before, but I've read for years that using one will take your photography to whole new level, and this lens has. I absolutely love this lens - so much so, in fact, that I took off the 24-80mm zoom lens I had been using (that is double its price) and I'm now using the 50mm f/1.4 as my primary lens.
It takes a little getting used to if you've never shot with a prime lens before because you actually have to move backward or forward to reframe a shot (zoom with your feet). But you quickly get used to this and I've found myself automatically getting into shooting range.
A friend of mine bought the Canon 50mm f/1.8 at the same time I bought my f/1.4, and I shot some side by side comparison shot with it. There is a slight difference in picture quality (the f1.4 being better), but the real difference is in build quality, speed of focus and noise output. The f/1.4 is super-quiet, and it feels built like a tank, especially compared to the cheap, plastic feeling of the f/1.8.
But what I love about this lens is its sharpness and its ability to get great shots in very low light. I've been able to shoot indoors without a flash and capture some beautiful, natural light. At the same time, I'm amazed at the clarity of the f/1.4. I haven't used the L-series f/1.2 version of this lens yet, but I don't see how it could get much better than this.
I shot a friend's daughter's birthday party with the 50mm f/1.4 and the shots aI got were simply amazing. That really low f-stop really opened up a lot of shot possibilities.
I highly recommend this lens.
I purchased this lens [...] few weeks ago. I have a high expectation from this lens after reading
a lot of good reviews about it. After opening the box, I have realized that this lens is built so cheaply as comparing
to the other "L" lenses I have. Well, I should not compare this lens with the other L lenses. However, after
hooking it up, I can hear rattling sound when it tries to focus. It supposes to be a USM lens that only dogs can hear the
motor spinning during the focus. I wonder if it is normal at all. So, I go to [...] to find a baseline to compare.
It turns out that the other people's 50mm f1.4 focus so relatively quieter than mine. I am not satisfied with this product
at all for many reason after all. 1) USM motor ring is prone to be broken if you don't handle the lens gently.
2) It does not come up a hood and/or a case for the lens and you need to pay $20+ to get a Canon hood or a few bucks
to get a generic hood from ebay. Cannon should include it in this product. Anyway, I sent it back for a refund
but I doubt that I will get a replacement lens that will meet my expectation for the money I paid.
This is my first lens with an aperture below 3.5. It added new possibilities in terms of taking pictures in low light conditions. The shallow depth of field is amazing. However, since I was new to such aperture as 1.4, i had to be more careful when focusing. The autofocus itself is good, and I like the full time manual focus feature. It adds more control.
The lens feels solid and durable. It's smaller than my rebel kit lens but it's heavier.
I also used it at higher aperture, like f8, to take portraits, and the the quality remains sharp. It's probably the sharpest lens I have at the moment along with my EF 70-200mm f4.0 (the quality comes very close to it).
50mm is pretty much what the eye sees so if you open your other eye while taking a picture it seems as though both eyes are looking at the object with the same zoom factor.
This is an EF lens so if you need to upgrade from the entry model canon SLRs to the higher end, like a 5D, this lens will be compatible with it.
I love this lens. New photographers ask me all the time what lens to get and this is the only one i suggest. It lets you take photos inside with out a flash plus gives you that great depth of field. For $350 its a real bargin.
I got this lens with my new Canon 7D. I love the pictures it takes. Perfect portraits even in low light.
It's a quick focus and a very useful focal length for individual shots of people. The 7D is not a full-frame camera though so this is too tight for my original purpose (I want to take pictures of groups of friends at parties and not have to use a flash). This would be GREAT on a full-frame camera, but on a crop frame camera it acts like an 80mm lens... far too close for my applications. I'm going to have to get the 35mm 1.4L to do what I want.
For the price, you simply cannot beat this lens. It takes beautiful pictures that are crisp and brilliantly colored even in low light.
It has a fast focus so pictures of children and animals who don't like to stand around waiting can be snapped super fast and crystal clear.
