As a child, in the 50's, I had this card game. My sister and I played with them for hours on end, never having heard of these authors. Later on, in school, we were already familiar with the authors when we studied about them. We didn't have the electronic and media entertainment that todays kids do but with a little parental encouragement, this card game would still be beneficial for elementary school children.
A friend of mine purchase these for me remembering how much I love famous authors and their works of writing. I am an avid writer myself and was extremely happy to get these cards. Each number has an author and on every different suit is one of their works. I loved thumbing through the deck to find the different authors and seeing what they had written. I loved that the deck came with directions on how to play a game incorporating the authors and their books. I would absolutely recommend these cards to anyone looking to stray from the deck of cards with hotel logos.
I purchased the Authors deck of cards for my sister, who is a teacher of English in Spain. She loved it, and from what she tells me, so do her students! They play regular games, but she intersperses the action with stories about the authors, sometimes making the game more challenging, as each player must later provide some information about an author's work. The students are young adults and adults, so I'm not sure if this would work for younger kids--but it has been a hit thus far, for a teacher and her ESL students in Spain.
I bought this for classroom use, so would prefer it not have any use other than for playing "Authors." Also, the original card game had larger type and pictures of the authors, because it did not have the numeric and card suits also printed on the cards. Larger text and pictures was more educational. With these cards, I must watch that the cards are being used for the purpose for which I purchased them--to learn the names of key authors and their major works.
