Aquasaurs |
| Product DescriptionAquasaurs are prehistoric creatures that can grow up to 2 inches, and you can now watch live Aquasaurs swim in an amazing prehistoric environment that's 250 million years in the making. Includes live Aquasaur eggs that hatch when placed in water, and a habitat that features an underwater volcano. Also includes Aquasaur food and manual. Habitat measures approximately 10" x 6" x 10" tall.Eggs may take up to a week to hatch but typically will hatch within a few days. Aquasaurs live approximately between 20 and 90 days after hatching. Adequate food is provided in this kit; however, "crab food" from a local pet store will act as Aquasaur food. ReviewsThis is very fun. I set it up and they hatched that evening! They keep dying and then getting overpopulated. They won't grow so it's hard to clean the water and they like the tempertures under the tempertures the instructions gave. It's a great thing for enthusiastic children and it is fun to crush the food and feed them. All in all I would not recommend this to children with high expectations but it is nice for everybody else.
I hate this product! I am very disapointed that the fish don't grow! The water is the right temperature and the water is clean. I just keep trying and failing. This should not be purchased during the Winter unless you keep your house at 80 degrees.
The tank is flimsy so we used an old, round, glass "gold fish" bowl that we had hanging around from other biology projects. We also used a fish tank heater instead of a lamp. We have had no algae growth. We had 5 aquasaurs hatch with the first half of the egg package and they have been really cool to watch. We enjoyed identifying all the body parts with a magnifying glass on the live aquasaurs and observing how they eat. We also had a bonus of fairy shrimp and clam shrimp hatch. We had a great time trying to identify the fairy and clam shrimp as well as identifying the white "patches" on them which turned out to be egg sacks. I cleaned out the bowl before use so I do not think that the eggs were already in the bowl so they must have come with the eggs of the aquasaurs although no other review mentions this "bonus" feature. Now our problem is what to do with the fairy and clam shrimp. Clam shrimp reach reproductive size in 4 - 7 days and generate clutches ranging between 100-300 eggs, one to two times a day!!!
My husband and I raised triops several years ago and thought this would be fun for our 3 year old son, who is infatuated with dinosaurs.
Cons:
I agree the tank is pretty flimsy. I put a little too much water in and the top kept popping off anytime someone would barely touch it, spilling water. I solved that issue with a couple of pieces of scotch tape (and removed a little water). I live in Colorado and our house gets pretty cool during the night, so we had to use a desk lamp with a 60 watt bulb 24 hours a day to keep the tank within the desired temperature.
Pros:
Not only did the 2 triops eggs hatch, but also several fairy shrimp (fresh water brine shrimp), and a bunch of daphnia (water fleas-not at all like fleas your dog gets)! With 3 different species of water critters swimming around the little tank looks like a picture from prehistoric times. My son loves looking at the critters and observing the differences in behavior. The triops are very active and dart around. The fairy shrimp swim on their "backs" and seem very laid back, while the tiny daphnia swim with jerky motions.
Overall, this toy has great educational value. It isn't a huge time commitment,is fairly inexpensive, and does not require a great deal of skill.
These were fun for both of my children, ages 2 and 6. We all have enjoyed watching them grow. We have started the second batch of eggs now.
